Women struggling with alcohol use have unique challenges. My experiences working with women struggling with alcoholism is that they are sometimes able to hide their alcohol use easily, have additional obstacles to getting treatment due to care-giving responsibilities, or don’t feel they have an issue due to not drinking an extremely excessive amount of alcohol.
Countless studies have shown that women metabolize alcohol differently than men, leading to cases of pancreatitis or cirrhosis after only a few years of moderate to heavy drinking. The way I see it is isn’t about how much you drink, it’s about your relationship with alcohol. If you or a woman you know is re-evaluating their relationship with alcohol, pass my info on. I cultivate a nonjudgmental space to assess and discuss alcohol use- understanding that there is no one size fits all approach. Together, healing is possible.
